Your SIL questions, answered plainly
Choosing a supported home raises a lot of questions. Here are the ones families ask us most. Can't see yours? Just ask us →
SIL is NDIS-funded support that helps an adult with disability live in a shared home, with support workers assisting with daily tasks and building independence over time. Importantly, the funding pays for the support — not the rent or the house. Read our full family guide →
No. SIL covers the support workers and support hours. Your family member pays their own rent and everyday living costs, usually from their income and Disability Support Pension — like any tenant. A separate NDIS funding called SDA can cover specialist housing for people who are eligible, but many people in SIL simply rent an ordinary home.
SIL generally suits adults who need a significant amount of support — often around the clock — to live safely and well outside the family home. It's common for people with intellectual disability, autism, or complex daily needs. If you're unsure, a quick chat will help you work out whether it fits.
Carefully. We match housemates on temperament, routine, communication style and interests — not just who needs a room. A compatible household is the single biggest factor in whether a shared home feels calm and happy, so we'd rather take longer and get it right.
Consistency is one of our core principles. We keep our homes small so the same familiar support workers are there day to day — because trust and routine matter enormously, especially for people with intellectual disability.
We believe families deserve genuine transparency. We keep you and the support coordinator informed with real evidence of what's happening and how your family member is progressing — not a report written long after the fact. And you can always reach a person who can act.
Absolutely — and we encourage it. Come and see the home, meet the team, and picture daily life. There's no pressure to decide on the spot. Book a visit →
Yes. We work closely with support coordinators throughout — from checking the fit and funding, to planning a gentle transition. If your family member has a coordinator, we'll happily liaise with them; if not, we can help you understand the next steps.
